Showing Mastiffs
I have just found your site while searching for information pn showing a Mastiff. I thought that I would ask is it normal for there to be only 20 of this breed at a Championship show with cc's on offer.
I have been to open shows with poor attendence but this seems a very small entry for such a well established breed

FRONT LEG AMPUTATION
I have an 18 month old gorgeous bridle dog (Henry/ 'H') of 93 ish kilos. He has a soft tissue sarcoma in his right front leg. We have reached the stage where the options are to put him to sleep or amputate his leg. Having spoken to several people with OEM knowledge, I don't think 3 legs will work out. I really wandered if anyone knew of, or had experience of a Mastiff copeing with one front leg. He is currently having pain relief from tablets and morphine based patches, however we are on borrowed time at the moment, and very very sad for a boy so young. Any advice or experience would be welcomed. WE want the best for him not us. Dave

Lick Granuloma
I have a rescue home that has taken on a dog with a lick granuloma problem.
He has had this for some time and had various treatments , antibiotics , creams etc. All of these have so far not helped .The creams he just licks off , as you would expect . he is with someone all day , the only time he is alone is during the night , when they put an Elizabethan collar on him , but he still managed to lick .His leg is now very swollen and the owner mentioned amputation, which I personally would be against due to his size .He has also started on another leg
Has anyone out there have any experience of this . If so how did you manage it and was it reasonably successful ,in giving the dog a decent quality of life .Any imput welcome .

Urgent Help Needed

If anyone can help please get in touch directly with Toni

elbereth@ntlworld.com

An 11 year old collie I bred has developed an autoimmune disease which is
affecting her blood cells - the vets want to give her a transfusion - sadly
my lot are not big enough - need to be 25KG plus and under 6 years of age,
does anyone have a dog fitting the bill - who they could take to Wey
Referrals at Woking? The vest have exhausted their friendly clientele of
bigger dogs

Thanks

The Bull Terrier and the Porcupine
For those of you who have seen te horrendous pictures of the bull terrier who took on a porcupine here is an update. Let us be thankful that we do not have a chance of this happening in the UK. I can't produce the pics here sorry but you wouldn't like them
Inca apparently did not know when to quit when she encountered the porcupine on Victoria Day, May 23rd. These are the pictures the vet sent before the long (and expensive) procedure to remove the quills. She had thousands of quills, and her tongue was so covered, she could not close her mouth.

It was pretty scary at first. She is doing okay now, but looks like a World War III survivor as they had to cut some out in places, stitched between her toes, and many quills bled on removal.

Here are still quills buried in her, but they should work their way out over time (I pulled four more today). She is on antibiotics and pain meds and thankfully is doing quite well. Maybe she was showing off for her new boyfriend, Rocky, I don't know; but he only got a few in him, which friends were able to remove. Ike, of course, had better sense.

I sure hope that the Queen of Quills has learned her lesson...

OEM Pup
We have a beautiful boy who is 9 months old. We also have an 11 month old bull terrier. "Bear" just loves his older sib and they get along very well. However on recent visits to the country our Mastiff has taken to following the bull terrier into the lake. He seems to swim (in a fashion) and enjoys it. The first time we were terrified that he would become tired and drown. Since he has now done it at least three times we think that he obviously likes the water. We are all ready to jump in should he need help. My question is to other more experienced owners. Is this normal? Do Mastiffs like to swim is it dangerous for them. Should we discourage this practice or is it good exercise
Thanks for any imput

Mastiffs and babies
I have recently received a few rather delightful pictures of mastiffs and human babies. This makes me think it might be quite nice to have a feature in the next edition of TML showing just how good our gentle giants are with the young.
So get out your cameras and start snapping, remember they will have to be printed as hard copy.
I will pass them on to the new editor
